Have you wanted to create a real PSA? Interested in public health? This is a great opportunity to get some hands on experience. (…I am so excited about this…)

According to an HSPH announcement:

Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, has announced that the agency is running a contest on YouTube in which you can film and post a public service announcement about preventing H1N1 flu. The winner’s video will appear on television, and the winner will receive $2,500. The deadline is August 17, 11:59 pm EDT.

Listen to Secretary Sebelius and find out more at the Flu.gov site.

Put on your thinking caps and get to work — August 17 is just around the corner!

This post marks the launch of the long-anticipated Society and Health Blog. If you are interested in how social forces and human behavior interact to influence population health and well-being you are in the right place. The authors of these posts are dedicated graduate students at the Harvard School of Public Health who seek to bring you the latest and greatest research and practices related to the social determinants of health.

What are social determinants of health? They include poverty, economic inequality, neighborhood context, access to health care, social norms, violence, discrimination, just to name a few. We welcome comments and feedback on our topics.

This blog will hopefully be the first of many activities that we will be promoting regarding society and health issues.

Enjoy!
